Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What Materials Are Camera Hard Cases Made of?

Camera hard cases are typically made of high-impact, durable materials such as ABS plastic, polypropylene, or aluminum. These materials provide strength and resilience, protecting your gear from external damage, water, and dust in uncontrollable environments.

Are Camera Hard Cases Waterproof?

Many camera hard cases are designed with watertight seals to protect your equipment from water damage. However, not all camera hard cases are waterproof, so it's important to check the specifications and IP ratings of the hard case you're considering.

What Is the Best Camera Hard Case?

Without being too cheeky, the best camera hard case for you is the one that suits your individual needs the best. Are you looking for something waterproof or crushproof, or are you simply looking for a little extra protection from a larger camera bag? Would you prefer a rolling camera hard case or one that you carry as either a backpack or a briefcase? Regardless, you'll want to be sure your camera travel case has the padded compartments you need to protect all of the camera gear and accessories you plan to carry with you.

Should I Choose a Camera Travel Case with Wheels?

Wheels seem like a great idea for helping you to move your heavy, expensive gear from place to place. That is, if you're planning to stay on even ground. If you plan to go off the beaten path with your camera gear, a hard case's wheels may not be suitable for rough terrain. If that's the case, you may want to consider a camera hard case that has both wheels and straps for carrying as a backpack.

What Are the Best Brands of Camera Travel Cases?

Samy's Camera offers a wide range of bags at a wide range of price points, but you'll notice that we carry more styles of certain brands. Pelican cases are known throughout the industry as great camera hard cases, and we carry more of them than any other brand. You'll also find many SKB Cases, and some from Tenba, Manfrotto, and other well-known brands as well.

Can I Get a Travel Case for My Tripod?

Most hard cases and large equipment bags are made to protect delicate camera equipment and lenses. Manfrotto and Tenba, in particular, also make a variety of padded bags to protect your camera tripod investment, especially the head.

Do I Need a Camera Hard Case or a Soft Gear Bag?

It depends on how hard you are on your equipment, where you plan to take it, and how much you have invested in your camera gear in the first place. If you've made a sizable investment in your camera gear, or it carries sentimental value, it makes sense to protect it accordingly. Camera hard cases provide the strongest level of protection, but as a result are typically bulkier. If you don't need as high a level of protection and are looking to be nimbler in your photographic style, a padded camera bag might be enough for you.
